How To Start the New Year Right
Hi Carleen,
This is the last ADD Management Guide for 2011! When we return in 2012, it will be with a brand new website, and a totally revamped newsletter will soon follow. We've been working very hard to create the new site, which will be "Your Go-to Guide for Managing Adult ADHD." I'll be writing you when it launches on January 1, so keep a look out!

In the meantime, this is a great time to talk about the coming New Year, and how to start it out on the right foot.

2012 is just 5 days away. And before you jump into the new year with all sorts of thoughts about resolutions and changes you want to make, it's important to first take time to reflect on the year that has passed.

As the New Year approaches, we often find ourselves thinking about all the things we didn't accomplish the prior year, and we vow to accomplish them next year. Few of us take the time to reflect on the past year and look at our successes and the experiences that we have learned from.

So here's a coaching exercise that will help you reflect on what's really important to you, and create meaningful intentions for 2012. It is this kind of self-awareness that ultimately leads to action in the areas of your life that are most important to you.

To do this coaching exercise, set aside 15-30 minutes to think about, write about, or talk about your answers to the following questions:

Looking back on 2011...

1. What were your successes?

2. What did you do or accomplish that you haven't given yourself credit for?

3. What unrealistic expectations did you hold yourself to?

4. What one thing would you do over, if given the opportunity?

5. What lessons did you learn from that experience?

Looking forward in 2012...

1. What one goal did you want to accomplish in 2011 that you weren't able to?

2. Why was this goal important to you?

3. What got in your way of achieving this goal?

4. What are you willing to do differently to accomplish this goal in the future?

Looking at yourself...

1. Who are the people that you are most grateful for?

2. Which of your strengths and skills are you most grateful for?

3. What is your best quality?

4. How will you use these strengths, skills, and qualities to help you move forward in the coming year?

U.S. Department of State’s American Music Abroad Initiative Now Accepting Applications

Using music as a means to engage audiences worldwide, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announced today that the American Music Abroad program is now accepting applications for the 2012-2013 season. Musicians interested in applying for this international exchange program, which consists of month-long, multi-country tours for approximately 10 ensembles from a variety of American musical genres, may apply at www.americanvoices.org/ama.

American Music Abroad ensembles will be selected on the basis of artistic quality and commitment to educational and cultural engagement. To represent the full spectrum of the American musical landscape, musical ensembles from across the United States that specialize in Hip Hop, Rock & Roll, Jazz, Country, and other American roots music including but not limited to Native American, Latin, Afro-Caribbean, Blues, Bluegrass, Cajun, Gospel and Zydeco are invited to apply for this international exchange program.

The deadline for applicants is January 16, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. PST.

American Music Abroad builds on Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s vision of “smart power” diplomacy, which embraces the full range of diplomatic tools – in this case, music – to bring people together and foster greater understanding.

The Department of State, in partnership with the Association of American Voices, will craft an international exchange that will engage selected American ensembles with international audiences, especially underserved youth. Through public concerts, interactive performances with local musicians, lecture demonstrations, workshops, and jam sessions, the American Music Abroad initiative reaches audiences in nearly 40 countries with little or no access to live American musical performances.

The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs promotes international mutual understanding through a wide range of academic, cultural, private-sector, professional, and sports exchange programs. Alumni of ECA exchanges comprise over one million people around the world, including more than 50 Nobel Laureates and more than 320 current or former heads of state and government.

With a focus on nations emerging from conflict or isolation, American Voices has taken its unique brand of cultural engagement programs, Jazz Bridges, YES Academy and Hiplomacy, to nations such as Iraq, Syria, Sudan and Afghanistan. ALL CHILDREN’S THEATRE FOUNDATION GRANTS FOR NONPROFIT THEATERS

Deadline: January 13, 2012. Grants available through the All Children’s Theatre Foundation are dedicated to sustaining theater arts education for grade school students and creating new opportunities for theater artists. Specifically, the Aurant Harris Theatre Grant is awarded to small and midsize nonprofit theaters throughout the United States. Financial support can be used for premiering a work, performance expenses, supporting established productions, and securing scripts and equipment.

2012 Our Town Grant Guidelines Now Available
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has posted the guidelines for 2012 Our Town grants.

Our Town supports creative placemaking projects that contribute toward the livability of communities and help transform them into lively, beautiful, and sustainable places with the arts at their core. Our Town will invest in creative and innovative projects in which communities, together with their arts and design organizations and artists, seek to:

· Improve their quality of life.

· Encourage creative activity.

· Create community identity and a sense of place.

· Revitalize local economies.

A key to the success of creative placemaking involves the arts in partnership with a committed governmental leadership and the philanthropic sector. All Our Town applications must reflect a partnership that will provide leadership for the project. These partnerships must involve two primary partners: a nonprofit organization and a local government entity. One of the two primary partners must be a cultural (arts or design) organization.

Pending availability of funding, grants will range from $25,000 to $150,000. Projects may include planning, design, and arts engagement activities that reflect a systemic approach to civic development and a persuasive vision for enhanced community vibrancy. The application deadline is Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 11:59PM EST. IRS Steps Up Enforcement with DOL (Department of Labor) and State Authorities

BEWARE! The IRS has begun a coordinated effort of enforcement and sharing information with the DOL and state authorities. A U.S. Department of Labor study found that as many as 50 percent of businesses misclassified employees as independent contractors. (source: pepperlaw.com)

Misclassification ramifications can be severe. The fine for an intentional misclassification can be a penalty equal to 100% of the amount in taxes owed. Simple mistakes on negligent reports can impose a 20% accuracy-related penalty! (source: isnare.com) 1099 compliance issues relating to independent contractors continues to be a dilemma to most employers today.

The Big Read Accepting 2012 Applications

The Big Read is accepting applications from nonprofit organizations to develop communitywide reading programs between September 2012 and June 2013. The Big Read, organized by the National Endowment for the Arts, is a national program designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment. Organizations selected to participate in The Big Read receive a grant, access to on-line training resources and opportunities, and educational and promotional materials designed to support widespread community involvement and participation. 2012 marks the 150th anniversary of America’s first Homestead Act. In observance of this milestone, the 39^th Annual Montana History Conference will examine the theme, “Opportunity for All? Homesteading Next Year Country.”

The conference will be held in Helena, September 20-22, 2012. The deadline for submitting a session proposal is February 1. Session proposals relating to any aspect of homesteading are encouraged. Possible topics include:

I Survived an IRS Audit

Uh oh. We are all afraid of getting audited by the IRS, but we don't really know what would happen in one. Here is the True Life story of an environmental organization's audit, how they survived, and their tips for the rest of us.

It's the phone call everyone dreads: "Hello, your organization has been selected for an IRS audit." The call came to Karl Dickson (pictured left), board treasurer of an environmental nonprofit in Milwaukee, and his caller ID showed that the call came from an unidentified cell phone. Karl's instincts were to suspect a scam.

Karl questioned the caller who told him (not very believably) that "most IRS agents don't have an office" and therefore use cell phones. She also told him they had been selected by random and that he was called because his number was on the IRS Form 990. She told him to expect a letter. (What? No IRS agent flashing a badge? Questions to Ask Prospective Board Members

A coffee date isn't a good idea only for beginning, tentative romances. A coffee or lunch date is an easy way to meet with individuals who may be good candidates for your nonprofit board. If you spend a few minutes ahead of time thinking about what to ask, you'll end up having a much better idea of whether it's a good match.

Frequently a first meeting with a prospective board member is set up as a lunch or coffee with a current board member and the executive director. It's a good idea to state clearly at the beginning that this is a "get-to-know-you" meeting and that no decisions need to be made before the meeting ends. Say that you'll follow up with a phone call to see if the individual is still interested and whether the board's nominating committee is still interested. If so, there may be another step or the nomination may go to the full board for a vote.

2012 Artists in Residence Program at I-Park, Application Deadline: January 30, 2012

I-Park announces its twelfth season hosting its multi-disciplinary residency program. Self-directed artists’ residencies will be offered from May through November 2012. Most sessions are 4-weeks in duration and are offered to those working in the Visual Arts, Music Composition, Creative Writing, Moving Image and Landscape/Garden Design. Except for the $30 application fee, the residency is offered at no cost to accepted artists and includes comfortable private living quarters, a private studio and meal program. International applicants are welcome. To defray the cost of travel, four $750 grants will be awarded in 2012 to international artists.

Please forward this information about a funding opportunity through the U.S. Japan Friendship Commission to any and all professional creative artists on your email lists. The National Endowment for the Arts cooperates with the U.S. Japan Friendship Commission in the implementation of this program. The U.S/Japan Creative Artists' Program provides support for up to five outstanding contemporary or traditional artists from the United States to spend a three-month residency in Japan. Eligible applicants are architects, choreographers, composers, creative writers, designers, media artists, playwrights, visual artists, or solo theater artists who work with original material (including puppeteers, storytellers and performance artists). Multidisciplinary artists and artistic directors of theater or dance companies are also eligible.

The next deadline for this program is March 1, 2012 for residencies in 2013.

The U.S/Japan Creative Artists' Program is extremely competitive; applicants should have regional or national recognition and anticipate a highly rigorous review of their work. Artists should also present compelling reasons for wanting to work in Japan.

Selected artists will receive:

A grant award in the amount of $20,000 to cover housing, living, and professional expenses

The Annual Ernst Peterson “Photograph Montana” contest, set up to improve the conservation of the Ernst Peterson Photograph Collection - housed at the Ravalli County Museum, is back!

The contest (in its 19^th year) invites photographers from all over Montana, amateur and professional alike, to showcase the “Best of Montana” photographs. During the contest, a portion of the vast Peterson collection is on display and interpreted, along with the contestants work. A modest entry fee is collected and set aside for the ongoing preservation of the collection. The deadline to get your photos in is January 28, 2012. The exhibit will be on display from February 2, 2012 – March 31, 2012. The judging and awards ceremony will take place on March 1, 2012 at 6pm.

Humanities Montana is seeking nominations for Humanities Heroes, to be recognized throughout 2012 as the nonprofit organization celebrates its 40th anniversary.

Humanities Heroes are individuals who have excelled in their support of the humanities in Montana. Support can take the form of presenting engaging programs, hosting humanities events, composing important books and articles about humanities topics, donating funds to sustain humanities work, and more. Humanities Montana especially encourages nominations for youth and young adults. (Note: Recipients of the Governor's Humanities Award are not eligible for this recognition.)

Support for International Museum Partnerships
American Association of Museums: Museums and Community Collaborations Abroad
Museums and Community Collaborations Abroad (MCCA), a grant program of the American Association of Museums, is designed to strengthen international connections through innovative exchanges between museums in the U.S. and overseas. The program empowers museums to connect people in the U.S. with people abroad while at the same time strengthening ties between the museums and their communities. The following themes, under the rubric of "The Future of Museums is Now", have been selected for the 2012 cycle: New Audiences and Changing Demographics, Investment in Green Practices, Connecting in the Age of Information, Developing Amateur Experts, and Innovations in Community Development. Grants ranging from $50,000 to $100,000 are available. Applying U.S. museums must identify a non-U.S. partner by either selecting from the Embassy Nominees or by locating a suitable match on their own. Children's Theatre Foundation of America: Aurand Harris Children's Theatre Grants Program
The Children's Theatre Foundation of America’s grantmaking focus is on theatre for children and youth, the utilization of drama/theatre in education for children grades K-12, and development opportunities for theatre artists working in the area of children’s theatre in the United States. The Foundation’s Aurand Harris Children's Theatre Grants Program supports small and mid-sized nonprofit theatres for premieres of promising new plays for children, the establishment of special production projects for children's theatre, and performance expenses of U.S. children's theatres to participate in national or international festivals. The President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, is pleased to invite applications for the 2012 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards.

The twelve award-winning programs this year will receive $10,000 and an invitation to accept their award from the President’s Committee’s Honorary Chairman, First Lady Michelle Obama at a ceremony at the White House. In addition, winners will receive an award plaque, the opportunity to attend the Annual Awardee Conference in Washington, DC in the summer of 2012, and will be featured on the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award website.

After-school and out-of-school time arts and humanities programs sponsored by museums, libraries, performing arts organizations, educational institutions (e.g., preschools; elementary, middle, and high schools; universities; and colleges), arts centers, community service organizations, businesses, and eligible government entities are encouraged to consider submitting an application. The Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum announces the thirteenth annual National Design Awards honoring lasting achievement in American design. First launched at the White House in 2000 as an official project of the White House Millennium Council, the Awards are bestowed in recognition of excellence, innovation, and enhancement of the quality of life. The Awards program celebrates design in various disciplines as a vital humanistic tool in shaping the world, and seeks to increase national awareness of the impact of design through education initiatives.

Humanities Montana is seeking nominations for Humanities Heroes, to be recognized throughout 2012 as the nonprofit organization celebrates its 40th anniversary.

Apply for Fellowship, Book Subvention, Major Grants

The 49th Annual Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts in Lake Oswego Oregon will present a Furniture Design Invitational as the feature exhibition of the Arts Festival to be held June 22, 23 and 24 2012. The Invitational will feature the studio furniture and lighting design work of forty-five (45) contemporary studio furniture makers from the Pacific Northwest and other furniture-making hot spots in the United States.

In addition, the Invitational will exhibit notable and influential studio pieces from designers of the 20th Century. Nominations of designers and artists who should be considered for the Invitational can be submitted to Linda Leigh Paul at media@ipns.com until February 1st 2012.

All interested furniture makers and artists are encouraged to submit low res images of work to Linda Leigh Paul at media@ipns.com for a supporting exhibition in a Pop-Up Gallery in the city center of Lake Oswego. The Pop-Up Gallery will be open beginning May 1st and run through June 30, with a possible extension to July 15th.

Your knowledge of local, regional and national up-and-coming studio furniture designers would help conclude a thorough search, particularly regionally, for Invitees for the exhibition.

In the last issue of Blue Avocado, we discussed how board evaluations of executive directors (CEOs) are different from all other performance evaluations in the organization. These differences -- including the limited ability of board members to observe the executive -- are also among the reasons why 45% of executives have not had a review in the last year (CompassPoint's Daring to Lead 2011 study). In this article we draw on that discussion and on the submissions of dozens of Blue Avocado readers to propose a process and an evaluation instrument.

Puffin Foundation Artist Grants
The Puffin Foundation seeks to open the doors of artistic expression by providing grants to art organizations and artists throughout the country who are often excluded from mainstream opportunities due to their gender or social philosophy. For the 2012 grant cycle, the Foundation will provide Artist Grants ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 to encourage emerging artists in the fields of theater, photography, and music. The Foundation is particularly interested in supporting innovative initiatives that will advance progressive social change. Prospective applicants must request funding guidelines and forms by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to the Foundation’s office by December 1, 2011. Meet The Composer: MetLife Creative Connections
Meet The Composer (MTC) supports the creation of new musical work and the engagement of new work with people and communities throughout the United States. MTC’s MetLife Creative Connections program provides grants ranging from $250 to $3,500 to enable American composers to participate in public activities related to specific performances of their original music. The program aims to increase awareness and enhance the creative artist’s role in society by strengthening the connections between living composers, performing musicians, presenters, communities, and audiences. Applications are submitted by a sponsoring organization requesting support for one or more composers (up to six) to participate in community outreach activities organized, sponsored, and/or presented by the organization. Support for Arts Facilities Nationwide
Kresge Foundation: Facility Investments and Building Reserves Grants
The Kresge Foundation’s Arts and Culture Program helps nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in the U.S. properly maintain their buildings through Facility Investments and Building Reserves Grants. This initiative is part of the program’s Institutional Capitalization focus area, which is designed to strengthen the long-term financial health of arts and cultural organizations. Organizations may apply for two types of grants: Facility investments grants support an organization’s renovation and repair projects. (On occasion, new construction projects that include exemplary environmental sustainability practices will be supported.) Building reserves grants are designed to seed or enhance a fund to support the ongoing maintenance and replacement needs of an organization’s facilities over time. Start-up organizations and those organizations that are government-owned are not eligible to apply. Preliminary applications are due March 1, 2012. The committee is open to the possibilities public art will bring to the project and interested in descriptive and/or conceptual art work that suggests or communicates the ideas, feelings, and themes outlined in the Request for Qualifications.

FILM

Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation is seeking the best in new independent American film to tour through its On Screen/In Person program.

Selected films will be screened in communities across the mid-Atlantic region accompanied by their respective filmmakers.

Filmmakers collaborate with host sites on the tour to develop community activities, such as Q&As, artist talks, or workshops, among other options, to further engage audiences in the screened work. The Foundation will pay selected filmmakers a stipend for each host site visit, cover all travel and accommodation expenses, and provide a per diem.

New Research on Artists and Community and Economic Revitalization

New research commissioned by Leveraging Investments in Creativity finds that artists play an integral role in the economic and cultural revitalization of cities and neighborhoods across the country.

Building Community: Making Space for Art is the first in a series of three essays authored by Dr. Maria Rosario Jackson, senior research associate and director of the Culture, Creativity and Communities program of the Metropolitan Housing and Communities Policy Center at the Urban Institute. New England Foundation for the Arts: National Native Artist Exchange
The National Native Artist Exchange, administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts, is designed to support the exchange of artistic skills and knowledge among Native artists. American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian artists throughout the United States may apply to teach, learn, and collaborate in traditional and/or contemporary Native art forms through travel from one region to another across the nation. The applicant must identify a collaborating artist and specific project as part of the exchange, which must be beneficial to both artists. Grants of up to $1,500 will be awarded based on budgets appropriate to the scope of travel. Requests must be received at least two calendar months prior to the departure date of the proposed trip. The Big Sky Documentary Film Festival is hosting the second annual Big Sky International Documentary Pitch Session on February 23, 2012.

The pitch will take place as part of Big Sky Doc Shop (Feb 21-24), a four day non-fiction industry forum during the ninth annual film festival.

Filmmakers have the opportunity to pitch their work-in-progress (WIP)documentaries to some of the top commissioning editors and funders for documentary film in North America. All documentary forms and all subjects are eligible to submit. Commissioning editors will critique and comment on each pitch. A maximum of 15 projects will be accepted to pitch in this session. Potential participants should submit a brief (250 words maximum) project summary and an additional one-paragraph project status report. A short (5 minutes maximum) sample reel of the work-in-progress may be submitted (via vimeo, youtube.com, blip.tv, etc.) in addition to the written application. Selected projects will have 20 minutes to pitch their project and show a short sample (if available) for the panel. Selected projects will be required to pay an additional $75 to participate, and will be notified of their acceptance by January 11, 2012.

PHOTOGRAPHY

EXPOSURE 2011, an international competition celebrating the power of the image. The faculty member will teach undergraduate courses in all levels of modern, ballet or jazz dance technique. The Big Read, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, is accepting applications from non-profit organizations to develop community-wide reading programs between September 2012 and June 2013.

Approximately 75 organizations from across the country will be selected. The Big Read was created in 2006 to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and bring the transformative power of literature into the lives of its citizens, and also to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment. Organizations selected to participate in The Big Read will receive a grant, access to online training resources and opportunities, and educational and promotional materials designed to support widespread community involvement and participation.

National Assembly of State Arts Agencies Legislative Memo

Senate Panel Approves Education Overhaul

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee moved ahead on October 20 with the long-delayed reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) in approving a bill cosponsored by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), chair of the committee, and Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY), the committee's ranking minority member. The bipartisan measure comes after more than two years of committee hearings, debate and negotiations. Significantly, the bill would eliminate current federal policies enacted in 2002 in the No Child Left Behind Act, such as the so-called "adequate yearly progress" requirements and the mandated federal sanctions for all schools that have created pressures to teach to the test.

Of relevance to arts education, the legislation would:

• retain arts education in the definition of a "core academic subject," ensuring eligibility for the use of federal funds locally on arts education objectives and activities;

• expand the meaning of "core academic subject" by incorporating the concept into—and thereby making the arts central to—additional federal education policies and programs within ESEA;

• create a new program called Extended Learning to provide competitive grants to school districts to extend their school day, specifying the arts and music as among the reasons for extending the time for learning;

• establish a competitive grant program with support for a broad range of subjects: arts, civics and government, economics, environmental education, financial literacy, foreign languages, geography, health education, history, physical education, and social studies, with an authorized funding level of $500 million. Currently, a similar set of programs is funded at a total of $265 million. The consolidated grant program was proposed by Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) and tracks a similar proposal in the Obama administration's 2012 budget;

• identify 10 programs of "National Significance" with a directive to the Department of Education to support "projects that encourage the involvement of persons with disabilities in the arts," presumably a reference to continuing support for VSA arts.

Harkin hopes to bring the bill to the Senate floor in December, where its prospects are uncertain. In the House, no substantive action has been taken on ESEA to mirror the bill adopted by the Senate committee.

New Research Bulletin from AEP on Benefits of Music Education

Beyond the intrinsic value of music to cultures worldwide, education in music has benefits for young people that transcend the musical domain. The Arts Education Partnership (AEP) reviewed an extensive body of research to identify high-quality, evidence-based studies that document student learning outcomes associated with an education in and through music. Music Matters: How Music Education Helps Students Learn, Achieve and Succeed was prepared by the Arts Education Partnership (AEP) with support from the Quincy Jones Musiq Consortium. Music Matters shows conclusively that music education: equips students to learn, facilitates student academic achievement, and develops the creative capacities for lifelong success. Announce Support for Creative Aging Programs

MetLife Foundation and the National Guild for Community Arts Education are pleased to announce the 2012 Creative Aging Program. The program was launched in 2009 in response to a major demographic shift underway in the United States---the number of adults age 65 and above will double by 2050---and recent research demonstrating that sustained participation in professionally-led arts programs can promote health and prevent disease in older adults.

The goals of the National Guild for Community Arts Education / MetLife Foundation Creative Aging Program (CAP) are to:

1. increase the capacity of nonprofit community arts education providers to serve older adults;

2. expand and/or deepen existing creative aging programs of high quality; and

3. identify exemplary creative aging programs as models for the field.

Grants of up to $10,000 are available to support creative aging programs in 2012. Following the announcement of grant awards, technical assistance will be available to applicants (whether or not awarded a grant) seeking to develop successful creative aging programs.

Because the guidelines have been substantially revised this year, we will host an informational conference call for organizations interested in applying:

National Assembly of State Arts Agencies Legislative Memo

Senate Panel Approves Education Overhaul

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee moved ahead on October 20 with the long-delayed reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) in approving a bill cosponsored by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), chair of the committee, and Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY), the committee's ranking minority member. The bipartisan measure comes after more than two years of committee hearings, debate and negotiations. Significantly, the bill would eliminate current federal policies enacted in 2002 in the No Child Left Behind Act, such as the so-called "adequate yearly progress" requirements and the mandated federal sanctions for all schools that have created pressures to teach to the test.

Of relevance to arts education, the legislation would:

· retain arts education in the definition of a "core academic subject," ensuring eligibility for the use of federal funds locally on arts education objectives and activities;

· expand the meaning of "core academic subject" by incorporating the concept into—and thereby making the arts central to—additional federal education policies and programs within ESEA;

· create a new program called Extended Learning to provide competitive grants to school districts to extend their school day, specifying the arts and music as among the reasons for extending the time for learning;

· establish a competitive grant program with support for a broad range of subjects: arts, civics and government, economics, environmental education, financial literacy, foreign languages, geography, health education, history, physical education, and social studies, with an authorized funding level of $500 million. Currently, a similar set of programs is funded at a total of $265 million. The consolidated grant program was proposed by Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) and tracks a similar proposal in the Obama administration's 2012 budget;

· identify 10 programs of "National Significance" with a directive to the Department of Education to support "projects that encourage the involvement of persons with disabilities in the arts," presumably a reference to continuing support for VSA arts.

Harkin hopes to bring the bill to the Senate floor in December, where its prospects are uncertain. In the House, no substantive action has been taken on ESEA to mirror the bill adopted by the Senate committee.

A Teacher for the Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Awards

In many people's lives there is at least one teacher who inspired them, and helped them become who they are today. Each year, The Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Awards recognize these teachers. On March 22, Stephen Sondheim's birthday, a select number of nominees will each receive The Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Award—$10,000 in appreciation for their contributions to the field of teaching. New Research Bulletin from AEP on Benefits of Music Education

Beyond the intrinsic value of music to cultures worldwide, education in music has benefits for young people that transcend the musical domain. The Arts Education Partnership (AEP) reviewed an extensive body of research to identify high-quality, evidence-based studies that document student learning outcomes associated with an education in and through music. Music Matters: How Music Education Helps Students Learn, Achieve and Succeed was prepared by the Arts Education Partnership (AEP) with support from the Quincy Jones Musiq Consortium. Music Matters shows conclusively that music education: equips students to learn, facilitates student academic achievement, and develops the creative capacities for lifelong success. New Education Materials from Ovation’s Arts Ed Toolkit

Ovation’s Arts Ed Toolkit announces its newest educational materials, including streaming program clips and downloadable, standards-based lessons. These free materials are suitable for grades 9-12 and include video clips of documentaries, films and complementary curriculum units. Data on School Administration Managers from the Wallace Foundation

Administrative tasks are so consuming that principals often have little time to focus on improving teaching and learning, the area where, potentially, they could have the biggest impact on student success.

Creating a new position, the SAM or "school administration manager," is one effort to solve the problem, and two new studies examine it. Implementation of the National SAM Innovation Project: A Comparison of Project Designs looks at different ways schools have structured the SAM job and explores how SAM/principal teams functioned within participating schools. Also, Research Brief: Costs of Participation in the School Administration Manager Process looks at the price tag, including costs to school districts for the SAM’s services, and the costs of overall program support.

Montana is aging at a faster rate than most of the other States in the Union.

The 2005 census projections indicated that by 2030, Montana is expected to rank 5th in the Nation in the percentage of people over the age of 65 at 25.8%.

The first of the Baby Boomer Generation turns 65 years of age in 2011 and for the next 20 years, the 65 and older generation will increase in record numbers.

Starting in January 2011, every 7.5 seconds, a Baby Boomer will turn 65. In Montana, this equates to 25 people every day turn 65 or more than 9,100 each year.

The 85 and older age group has been identified as the fastest growing segment of our society which means we are an aging society and that people are living longer.

Montana's 65 and older population is 14.68% of our State‟s total population and growing.

By 2015, Montana's 65 and older population will have increased by 22.6% and by 2020 it will have increased by 52.7%

In 2000, Montana had 160 people over age 100. By 2030, this age group may be over 3,000.

Many Rural/Frontier communities in Montana are already at or above the 2030 projection of 25.8% of their populations being over the age of 65 and several of our counties are rapidly nearing this figure.

Exciting Arts Employment Opportunity: Statewide Forums on Careers in the Arts for People with Disabilities

The National Arts and Disability Center (NADC) in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is pleased to announce support to conduct Statewide Forums on Careers in the Arts for People with Disabilities. The purposes of the Statewide Forums are to support activities that (1) assess the education and career needs and barriers for artists and arts administrators with disabilities; and (2) develop and implement strategies to overcome barriers and advance careers in the arts for individuals with disabilities.

The specific focus will be responsive to the career-related opportunities and challenges of artists, arts technicians and arts administrators with disabilities within the individual states. Past Forums have incorporated sessions on: accessibility and accommodations, benefits planning, professional development by artistic discipline, and stories of successful artists with disabilities. The Forums also represent an opportunity for artists with disabilities to showcase their talent through exhibitions and/or performances. States are to address the career development of artists with disabilities of all ages, including youth.

This program is for new applicants only. The revised guidelines extend eligibility to state arts agencies, collaborating state arts agencies spanning two or more states, or regional arts councils. Support will be available for 1-2 Statewide Forums projects ranging from $12,000-$16,000. Single state arts agencies may apply for $12,000. Multi-state projects or regional arts councils may apply for up to $16,000. Proposals are due Monday, November 14, 2011.
